Costs

Costs

Our ‘pick n mix’ fixed fee menu enables you to use our expertise only when you feel that you need help with a particular element, at a fixed price’

We have a range of options that can help you budget and plan accordingly and we will always agree costs and fees in advance with you so that there are no “nasty surprises”. Our aim is to be transparent about our costs so that you know exactly what to expect.

For new clients, we offer an hour long appointment at a discounted rate. Regardless of your marital status, this will effectively be for divorce, children or financial matters or any combination of these topics. Your appointment will be followed up with a detailed letter of advice. We will also include estimates for any further work which you may require. The rates for the initial appointment will vary depending on the particular issues you wish to discuss. This is because although your appointment will still be for an hour, the letter of advice which we subsequently send you will be necessarily more comprehensive if we are advising you on several topics. If you would like an appointment please telephone either office so that we can agree how we will proceed.

If you are intending to divorce your spouse or dissolve a civil partnership then, subject to our detailed Terms and Conditions, we can generally offer you our divorce/dissolution package at a set fee of £700 plus VAT plus Court fees. If the divorce or dissolution becomes contested or if we have to take any extra steps because your spouse/civil partner does not co-operate, then additional fees will be incurred but will be agreed with you in advance. This fee does not include any work in relation to financial or children matters. We do not offer a divorce package for respondents to divorce or dissolution proceedings because the fees are very limited and can be covered in our fixed fees (which are mentioned below).

Our range of fixed fees cover individual items of work. These fixed fees (sometimes referred to as “unbundled services”) are for steps that you will need to take in divorce proceedings, or for negotiations or proceedings relating to either financial or children matters. If you take advantage of our fixed fees you will represent yourself but consult us “behind the scenes” as your matter progresses. If you would like further details or our list of fixed fees, please telephone either office or email us.

For all other matters, costs will be charged at our hourly rates. We will give you an estimate at the outset. You may wish to set a cap on our fees so that you retain control of the final bill. We bill at regular intervals so that costs are spread and, at the same time, we will review costs estimates and advise you of any increase or decrease. You may if you choose spread the costs even further by setting up a standing order.

You can “mix and match” costs so you may for example use our divorce package, a range of fixed fees for finances and hourly rates for children issues.

If your income is lower than that of your spouse or partner, it may be possible to agree that he or she contributes towards your costs. Since public funding (legal aid) has been abolished for the majority of family proceedings, this has become much more common.
